It is the detail that separates the two at a glance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe finish is the other. This one is \u003cstrong\u003eGrade 5 Titanium, anodized\u003c\/strong\u003e — and anodized titanium is not paint. No pigment is added at all. Running current through the barrel grows a clear oxide layer a few hundred nanometres thick, and that layer splits the light falling on it. What you see is interference — the same effect as oil on water — so the colour is the metal's own surface, not a coating sitting on top of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eVoltage sets the colour.\u003c\/strong\u003e Thicker oxide, longer wavelength — roughly: the low twenties bring the barrel up bronze and gold, around thirty it turns violet, the forties blue, the fifties and sixties into teal and green, higher still into magenta. The exact numbers shift with the bath, so treat those as approximate. What holds is that each colour here is one setting on that dial: it cannot be mixed or matched by eye — you go back to the voltage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBaja Blast\u003c\/strong\u003e is the exception, and the reason this edition exists: rather than holding one voltage, the barrel is anodized in \u003cstrong\u003esegments\u003c\/strong\u003e — worked in stages, each segment taken to its own voltage, so the oxide steps up along the twist. Run close enough together the steps stop reading as steps: teal climbing through blue into violet at the crown. We call it the \u003cstrong\u003efade\u003c\/strong\u003e. It follows the helix, and it moves as the pen turns in your hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003ehighs\u003c\/strong\u003e of the flute are then taken back to a satin cut, revealing bare machined titanium along every ridge.
